But How?

If you live in a deregulated state, you have the ability to contract for your natural gas or electricity.  If you have never done that before, you are paying the rate that your local utility secured, usually for a short term, like 6 months.  However, there are suppliers in your area also authorized to buy energy on your behalf, called suppliers.  The suppliers have much more flexibility to buy at opportune times and for term lengths extending from 12 months all the way up to 60 months.  As a result, they can often secure much lower rates than the local utility.

Common concerns:

  • Will I leave my utility?  No. Your local utility will continue to service your account and ensure your service is never interrupted.

  • Then what does the supplier do?  They simply provide the natural gas or electricity, through your local utility, at a contracted rate.

  • Will I get double billed? No. You will pay your utility the same amount as always for their service but the amount you used to pay the utility for the consumed gas or electricity will be paid to the supplier at the contracted rate.

  • Does a quote obligate me to anything? No. You will get a list, like when booking a flight on Priceline, that will describe the various offers by term length and rate.  This information will empower you to make the best decision for your company.
